Through a decisive move, King Charles has officially removed Andrew Mountbatten Windsor of his HRH style and his title of prince.
The changes were formalized by issuing letters patent under the official state seal, that have been published in the Gazette.
The entry declared: âHis Majesty has been graciously inclined by royal instruments under the Great Seal of the Realm dated 3 November 2025 to declare that the individual in question shall cease to be entitled to possess the designation of âHRHâ and the titular dignity of âPrince of the realmâ.â
A separate record affirmed the removal of the dukedom from the peerage list, with immediate effect.
The notice stated: âHis Majesty has been pleased by royal warrant under his signature dated 30 October 2025 to instruct his government minister to cause the Duke of York to be removed from the roll of the peerage.â
This move comes after mounting controversy over the former prince's connections to the late financier Jeffrey Epstein, including the posthumous publication of a memoir by Virginia Giuffre.
Giuffre alleged that she was assaulted by Andrew after being brought by Epstein, claims that Andrew has always strenuously denied.
The king utilized his monarchical powersârecognized authorities held by the sovereignâafter consultation with Cabinet Office officials, rather than through parliamentary means.
Royal instruments and warrants are tools of this prerogative, used to bestow or revoke titles and honors.
Since the HRH style is conferred by such documents, it can be withdrawn through the same instrument.
After the initial announcement, the senior legal official was directed to draft the required paperwork for the removal of titles.
The decision also includes Andrew giving up his tenancy on Royal Lodge, a thirty-room royal property where he has lived for twenty years.
Officials fully supported the monarch's decision.
In spite of the stripping of honors, it was announced that Andrew will keep his South Atlantic medal, granted for his service as a helicopter co-pilot during the Falklands conflict.
