Steam Next Fest is currently underway, and gamers have encountered plenty of entertaining creations from small studios. But, one catches the eye for its unconventional concept. Called Unko Technica, this classic-feel side-scrolling game features a hero that is truly a turd striving to make its way to a toilet. For those curious, "Unko" means "poop."
How you interact is simple: you only need a jump control. Across 150 levels, encounter mini-bosses and unlock a market to acquire outfits for your dung hero.
Time your movements with caution, as a wrong move forces starting over. Leap using floating orbs to propel yourself upward, cross disappearing platforms, and touch triggers to open hidden paths. Gather UN-KOINS for buying tougher levels in which things gets crazy.
Visually, the game boasts vibrant level designs and an amazing background music. The simple visual style with shifting abstract forms evokes memories of players of old favorites like Earthbound.
Although difficult to recall other games where you play as a coiled turd, gaming often included scatological themes. For example, in Death Stranding, players make throwables from protagonist droppings. Examples include Palworld and Ark: Survival Evolved utilize dung as plant food. And of course, such content is present heavily in the South Park RPG The Stick of Truth.
Despite its humorous premise, Unko Technica has already received notable awards, including taking top honors at a major publisher's GYAAR Studio in 2023. This trial version is accessible currently on Steam, with the final release planned to debut on Steam on November 19.
